Lasry’s path to finance began with a solid background in legal fundamentals. After earning a B.A. in History from Clark University in 1981, he pursued a law degree at New York Law School, where he graduated with a J.D. in 1984. His interest in bankruptcy law led him to clerk for the Honorable Edward Ryan, then Chief Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York. His growing expertise led him to Cowen & Company, where he took on the role of Co-Director of the Bankruptcy and Corporate Reorganization Department. Lasry’s next move was to Amroc Investments, L.P., an investment fund affiliated with the Robert M. Bass Group. Managing capital for Amroc allowed him to refine his investment strategies, particularly in purchasing and restructuring distressed assets.

In 1989, Lasry formed Amroc Investments, LLC as an independent entity, focusing on acquiring trade claims and distressed debt. His success with Amroc paved the way for his most significant venture.

In 1995, he co-founded Avenue Capital Group, an investment firm that specialized in credit and distressed debt investing. His ability to identify underperforming assets and turn them into profitable opportunities helped the firm grow into a major player in global finance. Avenue Capital has since managed billions in assets across multiple regions, solidifying Lasry’s position as a leading figure in the hedge fund industry.
